Lab-Grown Paraiba: Why It's about to be Everywhere

I've been seeing the same thing from gem sellers on Instagram for the past few years now. Paraiba is getting expensive, fast, and everyone in the colored stone world is talking about it.

They're not wrong. In December 2025, a 13.54 carat Paraiba tourmaline necklace sold at Christie's in New York for 4.2 million dollars, more than seven times its high estimate. That works out to over 310,000 dollars per carat, a record for the stone at auction. Top Brazilian material is now trading at 60,000 to 100,000 dollars a carat, and even African stones from Mozambique and Nigeria are pulling 5,000 to 20,000 dollars a carat for anything over two carats.

The reason is simple. Paraiba is genuinely one of the rarest gemstones on earth. The oft-quoted comparison in the trade is that for every 10,000 diamonds pulled out of the ground, miners find about 1 carat of Paraiba. The original Brazilian deposits that made the stone famous are largely tapped out, and the market has been leaning harder on Nigerian and Mozambican material to fill the gap. Brazilian stones still command a 3 to 5 times premium over African ones, which tells you how much origin alone is worth right now.

None of that is news if you follow colored stones closely. What I want to flag is what's happening on the other end of the supply chain, because it's about to change what shows up in your factory quotes.

What I saw in Wuzhou

On my last trip out to Wuzhou (the synthetic gem capital of China), I walked through lab-grown gem factory after lab-grown gem factory, and almost every single one had lab-grown Paraiba running for a client. That was not the case a year ago. When natural material gets priced the way Paraiba is right now, the entire lab-grown supply chain reorients toward chasing that color, and that's exactly what I watched happen in real time.

The economics make sense from a factory floor. A natural Paraiba at even the low end of the African range is out of reach for almost every jewelry brand selling pieces under $1,000. A lab-grown version of that same neon blue-green, produced through the pulled Czochralski method, runs closer to 7 to 10 dollars a carat out of Guangdong. That gap is why every factory I visited had a version of it running, and why you're going to see a lot more of that neon color in the market over the next few seasons.

One thing to get right before you source it

A lot of what gets quoted as "lab Paraiba" isn't actually lab-grown tourmaline. Tourmaline is a notoriously difficult mineral to grow synthetically at gem quality and commercial scale, and most of the trade hasn't solved that yet. Nearly everything I saw being offered under that name right now is YAG, colored and cut to match the look. It has the color of Paraiba with more fire, making it beautiful for statement pieces.

That's good news, not a downside. YAG is hard enough for daily wear and throws real brilliance, so you're not trading away quality to get the color at this price. The only thing to get right is the name on the tag. Ask your factory directly to confirm the base material, then price and market it as what it actually is, a Paraiba-color stone, not a claim about growing real tourmaline in a lab.

Get that part right and this is a real opportunity. The color is having a moment because the natural stone is running out, and the lab-grown version gives you a way to bring that trend to your customer at a price point that actually works for your margins. Move on it now, before every brand at your price point is offering the same thing and the color stops feeling special.
